Buying a Kitchen Cooking Range or Oven
Self-cleaning oven: Self-cleaning ovens are excellent and can
save your rubber-gloves. Even though powerful chemical oven cleaners are also
available, they are a hassle to use and also pollute the air in your
home.
There are two types of self-cleaning ovens – Conventional
and Continuous-Cleaning.
The conventional oven type can be set
to heat up to 1000 Degrees F so that they nuke all food debris into ash that can
easily be wiped away.
A continuous-cleaning oven has a special interior
finish that oxidizes food spills every time you use the oven. This works
excellent but is not effective for large spills.
Broiling
features: Most of the ranges have a broiler at the top. Some of them
offer you the option to vary the temperature of the broiling element and others
are either off or on.
Oven racks: Oven racks are very
helpful in any kitchen. You can get an oven with two or three racks but three
racks are better than two as they give you more options. You have the option to
remove one or two of the racks. A half rack is also very helpful as it lets you
bake something tall along with short items. This also saves your time in
cooking.
Electronic controls: While buying a cooking
range, look for electronic controls that will enable you to do more than turn
the unit off and on and set the temperature. Some models will allow you to
program your cooking or delay the start. Make sure the controls are easy to use
and user-friendly.
Warming drawer: A stove with a
compartment with separate temperature control is convenient for keeping some
foods warm while cooking other food items.
Storage
drawer: If you buy a freestanding range, most probably it will have a
storage drawer. Storage drawers types with a removable liner are easiest to
clean.
Child lockout: This childproofing feature
prevents small children from opening the oven door. This is an important safety
feature to look into if there is a child in your home.
